The newest ride at Busch Gardens in Tampa, Florida: Cobra’s Curse

Busch Gardens is no stranger to thrill rides, and a brand new one just added to the line up on June 17, 2016. Although the ride, Cobra’s Curse, is labeled as a family rollercoaster, it’s definitely one that’s geared more towards the braver kids. After all, with a name like Cobra’s Curse, don’t expect anything too tame.

The Story

Every good theme park ride has an even better story behind it, right? Well, let’s talk about Cobra’s Curse. The legend tells of a Snake King who became very powerful, and although he had many followers, his power got the best of him. Neglecting what he once took care of, his followers became no more, which angered the Snake King. Before disappearing, the Snake King used his powers to block the light of the sun. The people who once worshipped the Snake King were enraged, destroying the complex of temples that they had once built in his honor. But a curse was also placed on this site, and if the temple is ever uncovered and the Snake King’s had is put back into place, he will unleash his fury like never before. Enter fun rollercoaster time.

The Ride

With maximum speeds of 40 mph and multiple vertical lifts, we guarantee this is a family thrill ride unlike anything you’ve ever experienced before. We don’t spoil it too much, though, so that’s we’re all we’re revealing—you’ll just need to take a “spin” on the ride for yourself!

8 Greek islands you may have not considered (but should)

Anyone planning a visit to the Greek islands for the first time often won’t hesitate to book some of the staples—Santorini and Mykonos, for example—and with good reason. They are beautiful and fun islands, and there’s a reason why they’re so popular. But if you’re looking for something a little bit off the beaten path, why not add a lesser-known island to your itinerary? Think less crowds, cheaper prices, and that same wonderful scenery you’ll find in the country’s packed islands.

For your visit to the Greek islands, explore the possibilities of:

1. Milos

In a nutshell: If you want some seriously cool looking beaches (and little to no crowds), Milos is your island. Our top pick: Sarakiniko Beach, which is more of a swimming spot than your typical sandy beach, but that’s what makes it special.

Top hotels: Aera Milos, Milos Breeze, Villa Gallis

2. Lefkada

In a nutshell: The beaches on Lefkada are undeniably stunning, but one of the island’s top attractions is windsurfing. If lazing around on the beach all day isn’t really your thing and you’re looking for some adventure, Lefkada can be a good island to add to your Greece itinerary.

Top hotels: George, Art Blue Villas, Anemos Luxury Villas

3. Zakynthos

In a nutshell: You’ve probably seen Shipwreck Beach before on Instagram or Pinterest, and it’s no surprise to see why. But not enough Greek island travelers ever make it to Zakynthos to witness the island’s majestic landscape in person, although it is easily accessible with direct flights from Europe. If you’re traveling throughout Europe, you can get to Greece via Rail Europe and then take a short flight to Zakynthos.

Top hotels: St. John Villas and Spa, Luxury Dream Villa, Zante Vista Villas

4. Skiathos

In a nutshell: Unlike a lot of other Greek islands, Skiathos is very lush and makes for great hiking and nature tours. On top of its amazing beaches, this island makes a good choice if you’re looking for a lot of different things to do outdoors.

Top hotels: Aegean Suites Hotel, Skiathos Princess Hotel, Magic Hotel

5. Symi

In a nutshell: Whether you’re visiting during the off-season when the weather is a bit chilly, or you’re just looking to escape the heat and take a beach break, Symi is a good option to consider. Explore Greek culture by sightseeing around the island, and visiting the fascinating museums, memorials, and churches.

Top hotels: Iapetos Village, Dorian Hotel, Captain George

6. Ikaria

In a nutshell: You’ll find some pretty unique rock formations on the beaches of Ikaria. It’s easy to see how the island’s top beach attraction, Seychelles Beach, got its name.

Top hotels: Erofili Beach Hotel, Hotel Nefeli, Kerame Studios

7. Chios

In a nutshell: From castles to museums, the island of Chios offers visitors several options when it comes to activities. If you plan to hit the beaches, be sure to bring water shoes, as they tend to be quite pebbly.

Top hotels: Argentikon Luxury Suites, Chios Chandris Hotel, Sea Breeze Hotel Apartments Chios

8. Karpathos

In a nutshell: Karpathos has tons of beautiful beaches with a lot of variety. If you’re looking to hit up a new beach daily, Karpathos just might be your ideal island for your next vacation.

Top hotels: Alimounda Mare, Althea Boutique Hotel, Rigo Apartaments

Cape Cod, Nantucket, or Martha’s Vineyard: Which is right for you?

If you’re planning a trip to the Cape in Massachusetts this summer, you may be debating whether you should visit Cape Cod, Nantucket, or Martha’s Vineyard. Some people will claim that it’s really all the same (and you may feel the same way, too). But ask anyone who’s gone to the Cape year after year, and for one reason or another, there’s a good chance they’ll feel very strongly about one particular destination.

Last-minute vacations in the summer could just be a matter of what’s available, but if you’ll have options and you’re unfamiliar with the area, we’re here to help you decide:

Cape Cod

CapeCod

CapeCod2

CapeCod3

What makes Cape Cod unique: Cape Cod is home to the Cape Cod National Seashore, which includes 27,000 acres of jaw-dropping beaches and landscapes, including the dramatic sand dunes that can’t be missed.

Why you’ll want to visit Cape Cod: You want to see and do a lot of different things. Cape Cod is much bigger than Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, so if you aren’t drawn to the idea of staying on a small island, Cape Cod may be your best bet. No two towns are the same!

Why you’ll want to avoid Cape Cod: You want something that’s a bit more on the mellow side. Because Cape Cod is much more accessible, it tends to get the most crowded. That’s not saying that Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard don’t get crowded either, of course, but they tend to move at a slower pace.

Nantucket

nantucket

nantucket2

What makes Nantucket unique: The entire island is safely accessible by bicycle via bicycle paths.

Why you’ll want to visit Nantucket: Nantucket is the quietest choice of the three, so this can be the perfect choice for someone who isn’t eager to pack their days with activities and have a busy itinerary (or even have an itinerary at all).

Why you’ll want to avoid Nantucket: You want the most simplified trip possible, and/or you’re planning last-minute (you may be out of luck when it comes to finding available flights or ferries). Because you can’t drive directly to Nantucket, it may not be the best choice if you’re looking for a spur-of-the-moment getaway.

Martha’s Vineyard

What makes Martha’s Vineyard unique: The gingerbread cottages in Oaks Bluffs are adorable, and you can’t find these anywhere else in The Cape.

Why you’ll want to visit Martha’s Vineyard: You want to escape the larger crowds from the mainland, but you also want enough attractions and activities to keep yourself occupied. Martha’s Vineyard is the ideal blend of both worlds, and is a great compromise between Nantucket and Cape Cod.

Why you’ll want to avoid Martha’s Vineyard: You actually want to visit a vineyard (sadly, there are actually no vineyards on Martha’s Vineyard). And although it’s just a short seven miles away from the mainland, you’ll need a plane or ferry to get there. Just like Nantucket, you may want to skip it if you’re looking for someplace simple to get to.

Visit Antartica and cruise with Oceanwide Expeditions

I don’t know how you guys feel, but I long for the day when I’m getting ready to go on another trip and people ask where I’m going, and I can finally be like, “Oh, you know. Antarctica. No big deal.” After all, after visiting Antarctica, I’d officially be able to say that I’ve visited all of the continents in the world.

Top Cruises - Save Now on Amazing Getaways at Expedia!

Antarctica is one of those destinations that many people, both avid and novice travelers, dream about one day making it to, yet only a small percentage make it there. Good news, though: travel to Antarctica IS becoming more affordable, and one particular company, Oceanwide Expeditions, offers 30-day cruises that make it possible to see it all.

Antarctica 15th January - 19th February, 2013 (Rolf Stange)

Trip highlights

Any trip to Antarctica I’m sure would be an unforgettable one, but there are some things worth pointing out that make this particular trip extra special.

Emperor penguins

While there are quite a few places in the world where you can see penguins in their natural habitat, no place will top Antartica. Specifically, you can expect to encounter Emperor Penguins on your trip.

Peter I Island

This is an uninhabited volcanic island that also seems seriously cool and not a place that many travelers to Antarctica have the opportunity to visit: in fact, it’s estimated that only 600 people have ever set foot on this island as of 2005.

Helicopters

The majority of Antarctica trips and cruises involve just seeing this magnificent landscape from the ground and exploring by sea, but this particular trip with Oceanwide Expeditions also offers helicopter excursions throughout the cruise, allowing travelers to see Antarctica from a point of view that most people never will.

The Dry Valleys

Another fascinating place you’ll visit on this particular voyage are The Dry Valleys. They haven’t seen rain in millions of years and are the most extreme deserts on the planet. Similarly to Peter I Island, very few people have had the opportunity to visit this very unique region of the world.

Historic sites

Throughout your 30-day journey, you’ll also visit some fascinating historic sites along the way, including Shackleton’s hut and Scott’s hut, which were once used by explorers in the early 1900s.

The Canada Glacier in Taylor Valley, McMurdo Dry Valleys. Ross Sea, Antarctica.

Trip details

Dates: Varies, check website for details

Leaves from: Bluff, New Zealand

Arrives in: Ushuaia, Antarctica

Stops along the way: Cape Adare, The Ross Sea, Campbell Island, Ross Ice Shelf (largest in Antarctica), Amundsen, the Drake Passage, and many others.

Visiting Santorini, Greece

Mention Santorini to just about anyone and everything you hear is nothing but positive. While I did have some mixed feelings during my visit, I have to say, it did live up to the hype and was a beautiful island.

Getting to Santorini

Santorini may be a tiny little island, but it’s really easy to get to. You can take a ferry from a lot of nearby islands, or you can fly directly to Santorini from numerous places. A ton of different airlines serve the Santorini Airport, including Lufthansa and Vueling.
Be sure to check all of your options first before making any final bookings, because you might be able to fly directly from Santorini or with just one simple connection, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be Athens, either. Before making any final bookings, try a booking engine like Cheapflights.com that will compare flights from different airlines.

Visiting during the economic crisis

My trip to the Greek islands this summer just so happened to fall during the height of the country’s economic crisis. Concerned friends and family members reached out to me, some even urging me to cancel my travel plans. But unless there is a crisis so severe that the airlines are offering refunds to affected cities, I have learned by now to not really pay attention to how the media spins things. I’ve dealt with worse—international travel when the Swine Flu was a huge concern, and being stuck in Japan during their worst earthquake in history. Bad things can happen, anywhere, anytime. Be careful, be aware, and plan accordingly, but think twice before canceling your travel plans. As far as my time in Greece? It was business as usual and from a tourist’s perspective, you wouldn’t even know there was anything wrong. We had no problems whatsoever, so if you’re still on the fence about visiting, please—GO!

Where to stay

There are a lot of options when it comes to lodging and city choices in Santorini, many of which offer sweeping views of the Caldera and the island’s beautiful architecture. Imerovigli, Fira, and Oia are popular choices, but seriously—choose Oia. This is such a unique little village and I haven’t really encountered any place like it anywhere else in the world. My only issue with it is that it is completely loaded with cheesy little tourist shops and it sure does get packed. The village itself is almost so perfect looking, that at night when all the little lights come on, I felt like I was in one of those fake countries at Epcot’s World Showcase—although, I’m not too sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing.

5W0C7439

One thing to consider about Oia is that it is all stairs, and you will pretty much hike to wherever you need to go. I actually enjoyed this, as I was eating way too much on this trip and I welcome a little bit of forced exercise. However, if you have mobility issues or just can’t deal with tons of stairs, skip Oia. You may also want to bring along a backpack instead of a suitcase, which will make transporting your stuff a whole lot easier. You can get some pretty good backpack-style luggage on Amazon.

Overall, I highly recommend staying here. It really is the heart of Santorini and what makes it such a unique island. In Oia, I stayed at the Charisma Suites.

About Charisma Suites

Charisma Suites is at the very end of Oia, so it’s peaceful, quiet, and private. Compared to some of the other hotels in Oia, you have to walk a little further to get to the restaurants and to the parking lot areas, but I didn’t mind this. It really comes down to convenience versus seclusion. If you want to be disconnected from the crowds in Oia, this is definitely the place for you. (Super romantic, btw.) But if you want to be right in the middle of the action, you may want to pick another hotel.

Another thing I liked about this place, which I believe is the same for most hotels through Oia, is that there are only a few rooms. The main pool area is a bit small, and shares a floor with the reception desk, but since there aren’t many people staying at once, it never feels crowded (and oftentimes is empty). However, there are only a couple sunbeds, so I suggest you get there early and claim one if that’s how you want to spend your day.

5W0C7435

With that being said, however, I think this is the kind of hotel where you really just want to stay at your suite. All rooms have private patios that offer amazing views of the Caldera, and some of the rooms also have private hot tubs. The hotel serves breakfast every morning on your patio, and at your chosen time.

drz-0458

drz-9998

The inside of the hotel is pretty amazing, too. It’s a cave hotel, and even if you don’t stay here, you should definitely pick a cave hotel if you’re coming to Santorini.

drz-0181

And check out that bathtub!

I’d recommend this place for anyone just looking to unwind, relax, and forget about the rest of the world for a few days. It’s perfect for couples—especially if you’re looking for the ideal honeymoon destination, or if you’re celebrating an anniversary.

They also have their own sparkling wine, which is delicious, by the way.

If you’re interested in learning more about Charisma Suites and booking a room, you can do so right on Expedia.

Sunsets

One of my favorite things about Santorini? The beautiful sunsets. These aren’t the sky-on-fire, explosion-of-rainbow-color-type sunsets, yet there is something special about them. If you are spending more than one night in Santorini, you should view the sunset from different perspectives.

5W0C7448

The first night, we watched it from our balcony at Charisma Suites. While this didn’t offer that postcard-esque view of the sunlight hitting the whitewashed structures of Oia, it offered an unobstructed, peaceful view of the Caldera.

5W0C7504

For our other sunset, we battled the crowds of people who gather on Oia Castle for the money shot: it doesn’t offer the best Caldera view sunset, but this is where you get the breathtaking view of the village as the sun goes down.

5W0C7450

_W0C7532

Oh, and one tip—don’t be so quick to scurry off, like most people do, once the sun disappears. The lighting gets even better, the lights go on in Oia, and it’s even more amazing.

5W0C7487

What to do

When it actually comes down to beaches and things to do in Santorini, this is where I feel the island is lacking a bit. Relaxing in your hotel, exploring Oia, and watching the sunsets—those are the highlights. And there’s nothing wrong with that. It’s a great way to spend two or three days. But beyond that? There isn’t much else to see or do. You’ve got the black sand beaches, which are neat and all, but overcrowded and nothing special compared to some of the other black sand beaches in the world. The red sand beach is definitely worth a visit—a unique little place that is also overly packed and with cold waters—so it’s really just a short visit. The hot springs seem to top all “must-see” lists in Santorini, but I’d say skip it. The water was lukewarm, at best, and an orange-brown color. It also smells really bad from the sulphur. Once someone said it felt like we were swimming in a sewer, I was ready to go.

If you want to leave all the planning in someone else’s hands, there are several different types of tours you can go on. Contiki offers a few that hit some of the main sights.

5W0C7537

There was one beach I did like a lot, however— Vlychada Beach (pictured above). This is pretty close to Perissa, and the sand is also black(ish), but it has very unique mountain formations (almost reminds me of something that was designed by Antoni Gaudi). It’s a wide beach that you’ll almost have to yourself, too.

Food

Another disappointment to me was the food. It was mediocre and expensive. In fact, everything in Santorini was pretty pricy, but I expected that.

We had already visited Zakynthos and Milos, where the food was absolutely delicious everywhere we went and dirt cheap. As much I did enjoy Santorini and Oia, I enjoyed the other islands we visited more. Milos was our favorite by a long shot.

Returning

I don’t have intentions of ever returning to Santorini—not because I didn’t enjoy it, but because it’s really, really hard for me to find a place that I love enough to go back to (I’m looking at you, Thailand and Italy). There are just too many places in this world that I still need to visit.

With that being said, I would absolutely return to the Greek islands one day. There are a couple hundred of them, and we only visited four on this trip, so I would love to explore some of the others.

If you visited the Greek Islands, which were your favorites, and why?

Hotel booking information: We stayed at the Charisma Suites in Oia, which you can book directly on Expedia.

Getting to Santorini: We took a ferry to Santorini from Milos, which we booked once we arrived in Milos. They are plentiful and you don’t have to worry about booking it ahead of time. Santorini does have an airport, however, so if you won’t be taking a ferry, you can find flights on CheapOAir.com.

Review: Disney’s The Lion King: Broadway on Tour

I remember when I first saw the Lion King when I was just 9-years-old. I was instantly captivated by the opening scene. Throughout my childhood, I watched this movie countless times. It easily became my favorite Disney movie and no other Disney film has come close to topping it. Naturally, being such a huge fan of the movie, I had wanted to see it on Broadway since it first debuted 1997. Out of all the Broadway plays I’ve ever wanted to see, this one was the one I wanted to see the most. I finally got my chance last night. I didn’t go to Broadway in New York, but Broadway came to Philly.

I may be working a bit backwards with this particular review, but I’m going to sum it up by first  saying that I have mixed feelings about the show overall. However, I do highly recommend it.

I loved the opening scene. It was fantastic. I feel bad for all the people who came in late. Seriously, don’t do this! Not only do you distract others, but you miss parts of the show. You really don’t want to do it with this show.

Aside from that scene, I’d say another well-done and lively scene was when (spoiler alert) Mufasa dies. All in all, the first act was much better than the second.

857

Now, I’m not saying the second act wasn’t good. It was! But the first act was amazing. The cast was great, too, but I’d say Drew Hirshfield, who portrayed Zazu, stole the show. He probably got the loudest applause at the end. You wouldn’t think it’d be Zazu who stands out the most, but he sure did.

My other favorite characters were Patrick R. Brown as Scar (dead-on!) and the hyenas (played by Keith Bennett, Robb Sapp, and Jacquelyn Renae Hodges), who were also hilarious.

859

They stuck to the story, for the most part, but threw in some differences from the film’s storyline here and there. Some were okay and worked well; others I thought were a bit unnecessary and strange. There were also some extra songs that weren’t in the movie that I didn’t particularly enjoy and thought the show could have done without, or done differently. They were just a bit draggy and boring. I think if they maybe had cut those out and beefed up some of the classics a bit more, this show would have been perfect.

Buying Your Tickets

Whether the Lion King is touring and visiting a city near you, or you’ll be visiting New York and want to see the Lion King on Broadway, Ticket Liquidator is a terrific source for finding all upcoming show tickets.

While You’re in New York City

If you’ll be visiting New York, we highly recommend the New York Pass if you’ll be visiting the areas top tourist attractions. This one pass gets you access to more than 80 attractions in the city, and saves you a lot of money overall. There are also a lot of other perks of having this pass, including Fast Track entry. Learn more about and purchase the New York Pass on their official website.

Springtime at Longwood Gardens

Whether you’re traveling to eastern Pennsylvania and thinking about visiting Longwood Gardens, or you live nearby and have been visiting for years, now is a terrific time to visit. Literally, right now. The 1077-acre garden has thousands of colorful and beautiful tulips that are in bloom (more than 240,000!) with peak expected to last through early May. Check out some of these amazing colors from this past weekend. I only expect that the display will just get more spectacular as the weather warms back up again.

I have to say that this place is really beautiful, even without the wonderful blossom trees and gorgeous tulips. I was thinking how amazing of a place it would be to have a wedding at. Unfortunately, they don’t allow weddings on the property, but they do allow wedding photographs with some restrictions. Seriously, this place has so many incredible backdrops for any type of photoshoot, but it is definitely very romantic. I suggest checking it out if you’re looking for a beautiful place to have a photoshoot in the eastern Pennsylvania area.

_W0C6846
Longwood Gardens is only about an hour drive from Philly, and also easily accessible for a fun day trip from other nearby states and cities–Washington D.C., Baltimore, etc. If you’re stumbling across this post and the tulips are already gone, don’t fret–it seems that there is always something going on at Longwood Gardens. In June, for instance, they have their Wine and Jazz Festival. Wine and jazz in this type of setting? Doesn’t get much better than that.

Of course, you won’t want to miss their spring blooms next year!

A visit to the Philadelphia Zoo

If you’re traveling in or near Philadelphia this spring, it’s the perfect time to visit the Philadelphia Zoo. I went this past weekend, and the weather was amazing–not to mention the zoo has something beautiful blossom displays going on right now.

zoo9
zoo4
I’ll be honest and say that I have mixed feelings about zoos. I love animals, and sometimes it bothers me seeing them in captivity, but I can also appreciate when zoos work hard at preserving rare or endangered species. I noticed that the Philadelphia Zoo seems to do a lot of that. In fact, one of the first exhibits I visited was the Rare Animal Conservation Center.

Philadelphia_728x90

This happened to be my favorite exhibit. There were so many interesting animals here! I’ve seen a lot of cool animals around the world, but there were definitely a lot of animals I was seeing for the first time at this zoo, particularly this exhibit. If you love monkeys (really, who doesn’t?) You would love this place.

This is a red-capped mangabey, but as I like to call him, a skunk monkey.

I enjoyed the big cats, too. In particular, the Canada Lynx was pretty neat. He looked just like any ordinary domestic housecat… except about 50 times bigger.

Other notable exhibits: The sea otters, which, were adorable.

These gorillas who seemed just as curious about us as we were about them. (Well, not so much in this photo).

A red panda! Joe kept repeating, “but what does he say?” I had to keep reminding him that it wasn’t a fox.

Oh, and there were these guys, which were somewhat terrifying, but pretty neat.

I really liked the fact that most animals, from what I could tell, had at least one other animal with them (no getting lonely) and overall, it seemed that the animals were treated very well and had very spacious enclosures. The tigers have a treeway, which is an overhead passageway that goes above the visitors’ walking path. There is one for the gorillas opening up this spring as well. It may have already been open when I went, but the gorillas were hanging out inside, so I’m not sure.

My only issue: they offer camel rides at the zoo, and I felt pretty bad for him. I even overheard some other guests saying they also felt bad for the camel. I really wish the zoo would considering putting an end to this, or at least just offering the rides for a very short time each day.

Other than that, I really enjoyed my time here and I highly recommend visiting!

Have the time of your life: Dirty Dancing on Broadway in Philadelphia

Okay, I couldn’t resist the cheesy cliché for this review title. But seriously, if you’re looking for a terrific Broadway show to see, you won’t be disappointed with Dirty Dancing. There are a lot of great movies that are turned into live shows, but this is just one of those films that is truly made to be on Broadway.

Now, I do have to admit something. I’ve never seen Dirty Dancing before. I know, what?! It’s just one of those classics that are on my list of movies to see, that I just haven’t gotten around to yet. With that said, I’ve seen and heard enough of some of the movie’s famous quotes and scenes, and I’ve gotta say: Gillian Abbott, who plays Frances “Baby” Houseman, nailed it. I mean… was that Jennifer Grey on stage? Samuel Pergande as Johnny Castle was also great—so was the entire cast, really. But I really enjoyed Abbott, whereas Joe felt that Emily Rice recreated her character as Lisa Houseman the best of all. Overall, I’d guess that the entire play did a great job at recreating the film in its entirety. The couple next to me said that it was spot-on.

A couple things to point out about this particular play: so the main characters, which of course would be Baby and Johnny, did not sing during the performance. This has to be the first Broadway show I’ve seen that not only didn’t everyone on stage sing, but the main performers? They especially did.

Now, I’m okay with this. Joe said he didn’t like it, but this performance is also very dance-intensive. After all, it’s Dirty Dancing! Had the main characters did sing, they would likely be out of breath. But I do have to point out that the two main people who were singing, Jennlee Shallow and Doug Carpenter, had some amazingly strong voices.

DirtyDancing

Aside from the incredible dancing (it’s enough to inspire you to sign up for lessons), I felt that the acting was great as well. This isn’t the type of show that is loaded with special effects and fancy set designs. While a visually stunning show is also a fun experience in its own way, the entertaining storyline and engaging characters were enough to draw you in on their own.
