The best hotel in Rome, Italy: Hotel Hassler Roma

I have to be honest: Rome isn’t exactly my favorite city. I was only visiting because I was traveling with my mom and it was her first time in Europe, and for any traveler, Rome is a staple city that shouldn’t be missed. But this second time around, there was a silver lining and easily the highlight of my recent visit: Hotel Hassler Roma. I thoroughly researched the accommodation options in Rome, and I can honestly say that to me, this is the city’s best and most luxurious property.

It’s a gorgeous hotel, but let’s start with the location: it’s right on top of the Spanish Steps. How cool is that? Not only are you located right at one of the city’s icons, but you can walk to a lot of the other main attractions, including the Colosseum and Trevi Fountain.

IMG_2372

IMG_2374

I learned that each of the hotel’s rooms are each uniquely decorated, so unless you request the same room, you might get a room with a completely different theme when you re-visit. There are also a variety of suites available that range in sizes and prices, with the most expensive being the presidential penthouse suite.

IMG_2353

And this suite is not just super swank, but the view is amazing.

IMG_2360

I mean seriously, look at it. This has got to be the best view in all of Rome! (Photos really don’t do it justice). I didn’t get to spend more than just a few minutes in the penthouse suite, so I can’t really comment on my experience, but I’m sure it’s nothing short of amazing.

IMG_2365

And even if you don’t stay in the penthouse suite, you can still enjoy some of these fantastic views from other parts of the hotel.

The hotel also offers wedding packages, so if you’re thinking about a destination wedding, Hotel Hassler Roma would make a fantastic venue. It really is decorated beautifully all throughout.

IMG_2522

The owner, Roberto E. Wirth, is a very nice man who seems to be genuinely interested in his guests’ experiences and wants to get to know the people who stay there (and not just the travel writers). This was refreshing, as it is quite rare for guests to actually get to meet the owner of the hotel they’re staying at, at least a large one like Hotel Hassler Roma.

SWISS

Overall, I have to be honest and say that I don’t recommend that anyone actually go to Rome for more than a day, but I do recommend that anyone with a high accommodations budget who does go to stay at Hotel Hassler Roma, a stunning hotel with hospitality that’s second to none. You won’t be disappointed.

My travel plans for 2015

The new year has just begun, but I already have some exciting travel plans in the works. Here’s some of what you’ll be seeing on Travel Blurbs in 2015:

beach on St. Lucia

St. Lucia

A few months back, I posted about an amazing airfare deal that I found on FlightHub.com. For less than $200.00 roundtrip, tickets were available to several different Caribbean destinations from Newark airport. St. Lucia was one of them, and being that it’s one of my favorite Caribbean islands and airfare is normally quadruple the cost, I jumped at the opportunity.

Hotel information: Previously known as the Jalousie Plantation, we’ll be staying at the Viceroy Sugar Beach.

Miami Beach Skyline

Florida

I’m from Florida so most of my family and friends are there, and have several trips planned to Orlando, Ormond Beach, Daytona Beach and Miami.

Hotel information: Staying with family, but if you’re looking for some amazing resorts in Florida, try Orlando Select Vacation Homes, Wyndham Ocean Walk in Daytona Beach, or Homes at 1 Hotel South Beach in Miami.

Maldives

Maldives

Nothing beats an overwater bungalow and beautiful beach. The Maldives have been one of my bucket list destinations for a while now, and I’m counting down the days until I’ll be there.

Hotel information: We’ll be staying at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island.

Two Leopards play fighting in Yala national park, Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka

We’ve been planning our Maldives trip for a while now, and could never really find a flight that worked with our budget or schedule. We discovered that booking a separate flight to Sri Lanka and then flights from Sri Lanka to Maldives saved us hundreds of dollars per ticket, while also giving us the opportunity to visit a new country. Sri Lanka always looked beautiful to me, but I had no idea just how amazing it was until I began planning out the details of our trip.

This Asian country just south of India is actually home to the densest leopard population in the world, and is a great place to go on safari.

Hotel information: We booked our stay and safaris with Leopard Trails in Yala National Park, and we’re really looking forward to it. In Colombo, we’ll be staying at Cinnamon Red Colombo.

Qatar

Qatar

We’ll only be there for a day during a layover, but I’m looking forward to exploring the city of Doha.

Hotel information: We’ll be staying at the amazing Ritz Carlton Sharq Village & Spa.

Antigua

Antigua

Another terrific airfare deal: only $180.00 roundtrip from Newark, this time found on CheapOAir.

Hotel information: We will be staying at the beautiful Carlisle Bay.

Zakynthos Shipwreck bay

Greece

The Greek islands have been on my radar for quite some time, but airfare during the summer (which is the time to go, as it’s too cold the rest of the year) has always been so expensive. We recently found a great flight using miles, and booked our trip for this summer.

I was incredibly overwhelmed with all of the amazing islands that Greece has to offer. If it’s everything it appears to be, it may just have the potential to beat out Thailand as my favorite country.

After months of research and deliberation, we finally decided what islands we’ll be visiting this time around: Santorini, Zakynthos, Crete, and Milos.

We’re bypassing Athens completely, as I’ve heard from many that it’s not that nice of a city, and that it’s too hot and crowded in the summer. Keep this in mind if you’re booking a Greek island trip during the summer, and know that there are other (and often much cheaper) options that allow you to entirely skip Athens if that’s what you’d prefer. We have a very short layover in Zurich only, and straight from there we go to Zakynthos.

Hotel information: Hotel Strada Marina (Zakynthos), Best Western Hotel Del Mar (Milos), Charisma Suites (Santorini), Kriti Hotel (Crete)

Germany

It’s another 24-hour layover, but this summer we’ll be in Dusseldorf.

Hotel information: We will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Dusseldorf.

What’s on your travel agenda for 2015?

My worst travel moments of 2014

With the good also comes the bad, and although I’d like to forget about some of this stuff completely, here are some of my worst travel moments of 2014:

Rome Street Scene: people talking on the street

Getting ripped off in Rome

Let me be blunt: I hate Rome.  Sure, it’s a staple city with some must-see attractions. But I say if you can get in and out in just a few hours, you’re better off.

I know a lot of people will agree with me, and others won’t. That’s fine. Why don’t I like Rome? Aside from the Coliseum, Rome is like any other big city. Nothing special. I almost don’t even feel like I’m in Italy. The streets are dirty, the crowds are overwhelming, and a lot of the people are rude. More specifically, the unlicensed cab drivers–which frequently blend in with the legitimate ones–want nothing more than to rip off unsuspecting tourists. Sadly, I was a victim of the bill switch scam when I visited, which is when a driver pretends you gave him a much smaller bill than you actually did and demands you pay the “full fare.” In the end, you pay double or triple the amount–not to mention they turn off their meters off halfway through the journey and demand a ridiculous amount of money.

I realize this was my fault and I’m usually alert of such things, including conniving taxi drivers (they’re in a lot of cities, not just Rome). But boy, the problem is extremely widespread in Rome, more so than any other place I’ve ever visited.

Travel, Indien, India

The heat in India

We purposely traveled to India during its hottest month, May, to increase our chances of seeing tigers at Ranthambore National Park. Well, we were successful and saw quite a few, but this also meant enduring this miserable heat for the rest of our trip. With the exception of the evenings, the average temperature throughout our India trip was a steady and dreadful 115 degrees Fahrenheit. It was so hot that I was getting fevers. I wasn’t sick because I had no other symptoms and they’d go away at night. Seriously though, India in May makes me believe that spontaneous combustion might just be possible.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Driving in Fethiye

Driving in other countries, especially in Europe, is a lot different from driving in the United States. Winding mountain roads without guardrails are the norm, and I’d been on some scary drives before.

Or so I thought.

Nothing could ever prepare me for the awful and dangerous drive that is the mountain roads of Fethiye. To be more specific, I was heading toward the Lissiya Hotel, and as gorgeous as it was, I’m not sure I’d recommend anyone stay there because of how scary the drive was. In particular,  the extremely thin, unpaved, and uphill portion that comes right before you arrive at the hotel is the icing on the cake. The most terrifying part of all was when our car fishtailed right near an edge with a steep and deadly drop.

RoyalCaribbean

My experience with Royal Caribbean

Over the summer, I took a nine-night cruise and while the destinations were absolutely amazing, the cruise itself was awful. I dreaded getting back on the boat each day.

I’m surprised because I’ve cruised with RC before, but they were shorter cruises that left out of Miami. Maybe it’s just a whole new ballgame when it comes to European cruises, but the entire experience from the beginning was awful. The “entertainment” for nine days was horrendously boring (I think they did it on purpose so that you’d spend money drinking yourself silly), many of their male staff members were pretty creepy, all of the food was disgusting, and they screwed up so many things. Screwed up our dinner reservations, screwed up our bills, screwed up laundry, and the list goes on.

Are there any travel nightmares from this year that you’d like to forget?

My best travel moments of 2014

With 2014 coming to an end, it’s a perfect time to reflect on this year’s trips. From international getaways to weekend jaunts, some of my best travel moments include:

Longtail boats moored on Railay Beach, Krabi, Thailand.

Re-visiting Thailand

I spent three months in Thailand back in 2009 when I first got my passport. While I loved the entire country, I found the beaches along the country’s Andaman Coast to be particularly exceptional. I’ve visited 44 countries in total now, and nothing has yet to beat Thailand’s beaches and islands (although French Polynesia comes pretty close).

I was excited to be re-visiting Railay Beach five years later, my favorite spot of all–but I was also a little nervous. Would it be ruined by tourism? Would it be just as beautiful as I remembered?

While it does seem more tourists have discovered just how wonderful Thailand is in the last five years (especially in Phuket), it certainly wasn’t ruined. As far as the beaches still being as pristine as I remember–absolutely. In fact, as I told Joe when we first arrived:

“This place is even prettier than I remember it.”

AbbeyRoad

Traveling with my mom

During the summer, my mom and I spent an amazing two weeks traveling through Europe together. It was her first time traveling abroad and she had just gotten her passport. We visited five countries in total, and overall, the entire experience was very special to me. Not only was it incredible to visit some of the most beautiful parts of Europe, but I feel very fortunate that my mom and I were able to make these wonderful memories together.

CathayPacific

Flying business class on Cathay Pacific

Not all business class cabins are created equally, and I’ve heard good things for a while now about Cathay Pacific. We were able to find availability recently using our miles, and this is the flight we booked for our Vietnam, Thailand, and Hong Kong trip. This is by far the nicest first/business class I’ve flown in before: lay-flat seats, tons of space, large selection of movies, etc. The flight from Newark to Hong Kong was almost 16 hours, but it honestly didn’t feel that long at all.

Hot air balloon flying over Cappadocia Turkey

Hot air balloons in Cappadocia, Turkey

Hot air ballooning is one of the top attractions in Cappadocia, and while you wouldn’t catch me dead in one of those things (major height phobia, not to mention it’s pretty dangerous) it was an incredible sight to witness. In fact, as a spectator, I think you get to see more than you do while you’re in a balloon. We arrived at the launching site just before sunrise and watched as the balloons prepared for their flights and then slowly took off, one by one. We climbed a huge hill to get an amazing view of all the balloons soaring overhead (approximately 100 of them take flight every day, as long as the weather is cooperating) and it really was magical to see all these balloons soaring through the sky.

Favorites

I also thought I’d do something a little different this year, and in addition to highlighting some of my best moments, I wanted to also mention some of my favorites:

Pesto
Favorite food: Cinque Terre, Italy
It’s a popular opinion: Italy has some of the best food in the entire world. Because cheese. And pasta. And pizza. And wine. And more cheese…

But Cinque Terre was exceptionally delicious. This region is the birthplace of pesto, and I love me some good pesto.

MuseumHotel

Favorite hotel: Museum Hotel

This cave hotel is located in the Goreme region of Cappadocia, Turkey and is one of the most unique places I’ve stayed at. I spent a long time trying to figure which cave hotel to stay at, and I’m confident that this one is the top choice.

Kaputas

Favorite beach: Kaputas Beach, Kas, Turkey

While Thailand overall is still my favorite beach destination, this particular beach has to be the best one I’ve visited this year.

Mdina

Favorite city visited for the first time: Mdina, Malta

Visiting the walled city of Mdina is like taking a step back in time. So very unique and I really loved the architecture.

Hagia Sophia mosque, Istanbul, Turkey.

Favorite country visited for the first time: Turkey

I visited a lot of countries this year for the first time: India, Malta, Spain, Vietnam, etc. Maybe it’s because I was there the longest and got more time to explore it, but out of all the countries I visited for the first time, Turkey was my favorite.

What were some of your best travel moments this year?

Broadway’s NEWSIES kicks off tour in Philadelphia

Have you always wanted to visit New York and see a Broadway play? With more hit Broadway shows going on tour, you no longer have to: the shows will come to you.

Last night in Philly marked the first night of NEWSIES on tour. This is only available for a limited time ‘til Sunday, November 2nd. Whether you’re currently visiting or living in the area, don’t miss your chance to see this highly entertaining show.

Warning: Post contains spoilers.

The play is inspired by the real newsboy strike of 1899 when the price of newspapers (or shall we say, papes) went up. The show, which originally opened on Broadway in 2012, tells a compelling story with both an engaging and humorous storyline. It’s a play that kids and adults alike will enjoy.

Favorites

Parts: The play’s peak of excitement, which was the moment the newsies decided to form a union and go on the strike. I also enjoyed the part when Katherine was under a great deal of pressure to meet a writing deadline. I know the feeling all too well!

Voice: Stephanie Styles as Katherine, Angela Grovey as Medda Larkin

Acting: Les, played last night by Vincent Crocilla, was just adorable and hilarious. Dan DeLuca also did a great job as the play’s star and strike organizer, Jack Kelly.

Overall Impression

It was a fabulous show, and judging by all the comments I was hearing as I was exiting, a lot of other people felt the same. And while the singing and acting was pretty good, what really stood out for me was the dancing, which was phenomenal.

Academy of Music

This is my second time visiting the Academy of Music and it’s such a beautiful place, and the perfect venue for a Broadway show.

Visitor Information

Buy tickets to Newsies: You don’t necessarily have to be in Philly or New York City to see Newsies the musical, because they are frequently on tour. Check Ticket Liquidator to see the latest updates for tour dates and to purchase your tickets.

Save on tickets to performances at the Academy of Music: If you’ll be in Philly and want to enjoy some live entertainment, Ticket Network is a great website for finding tickets, including to performances happening at the Academy of Music. From sporting events, to musicals, to concerts, you can get the tickets you’re looking for and at amazing prices.

Hotels in Philadelphia: The Academy of Music in the heart of Philly’s Center City. Our top picks for hotels in the area include The Ritz-Carlton Philadelphia, The Rittenhouse, and Rittenhouse 1715.

Flights to the Philadelphia International Airport: Tons of routes from around the country (and the world) go directly to the Philadelphia International Airport every day. To find a flight that’s best for you, check out OneTravel to compare your options.

Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière in Paris

Paris: you love it or you hate it. I’ve visited three times so far and it’s one of my favorite cities on Earth—honestly, I don’t see how anyone can dislike such an enchanting place. The entire country of France is stunning, from the beaches in the South of France to the rolling hills of the French countryside. But there is just something special about Paris that will keep me coming back for more. I’ve stayed in various parts of the city—the first time, near the Eiffle Tower; the second time was down the street from Moulin Rouge. This time around, I stayed at Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière.

France Rail pass from Rail Europe

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière might just have the ritziest location of any hotel in the entire city, where Avenue George V meets with the Champs-Élysées. The area is conveniently situated near upscale shops, fine dining, and cafés, all leading up to the magnificent Arc de Triomphe in the center of the Place Charles de Gaulle. As an added bonus, if you ride one of those double-decker buses (such a fun way to explore a city like Paris, and such a convenient way to get from point of interest to another) there’s a stop just a stone’s throw away.

Champs-Elysees avenue at night

Whether you favor boutique hotels or you’re seeking luxury, this hotel offers the best of both worlds. My first impression was certainly a good one, and I really appreciated the individualized attention that all of their guests receive, which was evident to me even prior to my arrival.

IMG_0345

It’s the Little Things

Before I even left for Europe, I was emailed a questionnaire from one of the hotel’s butlers. The questionnaire was meant to customize your visit and ensure that everything is to your liking during your stay–everything down to if I’d like a Nespresso machine in the room, to what color flowers and what type of music I’d prefer in the room upon my arrival. The room also includes a mini bar (it’s actually not so mini) that is fully-stocked with your favorite non-alcoholic beverages. These beverages are free, and re-stocked daily. The little things can really go a long way sometimes, and this place excels in hospitality.

IMG_0369

Once I arrived, I was impressed with the hotel’s beautiful interior design, from the lovely lobby to the tastefully decorated room. It is no wonder that this hotel is a favorite amongst many celebrities—Scarlett Johansson, Robin Thicke, and Quentin Tarantino, just to name a few.

Capture Your Memories

My husband, Joe, has jokingly said in the past that he’d one day like to hire a camera crew to follow us around on one of our trips. It sounds like a fun idea in theory—after all, what better way to capture your memories? Well, Hotel Fouquet’s Barrière offers this very service with their Lights, Camera, Action! packages. The hotel supplies a professional camera crew to follow you around in Paris and film your vacation—how incredibly cool is that?

178054627

They can customize the experience to your liking, taking you to specific city sights based on who you’re traveling with and what type of theme you’re after. For example, if you’re traveling with your significant other, your video can document your journey as you visit the city’s most romantic sites.

But this package isn’t just for lovebirds, either. The staff can customize all types of packages, whether you’re traveling solo, with friends, or with family. Packages, which include accommodations and other extras, begin at €1,420 (approximately $1,815 USD) per night. Visit this link to learn more.

Be sure to check out Fouquet’s Restaurant, which first opened in 1899 and offers traditional dining. Guests can also take advantage of 24/7 butler service and free high-speed Internet. Once again, it’s the little things.

The extraordinary works of Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona

Whenever you think of Barcelona, what’s the first thing that comes to mind? The works of Antoni Gaudi.

Sure, Barcelona has its other charms–delicious sangria, tapa restaurants on every corner, and your run-of-the-mill beaches. But I’ve been intrigued by Antonio Gaudi’s work for some time now, and if you also have an appreciation for quirky architecture, then you’ll want to visit Barcelona. There are seven different Gaudi sites in Barcelona, but my time was limited, so I narrowed it down to the following three:

IMG_0711

Casa Milà

Casa Milà was originally built in the early 1900s for married couple Pere Milà and Roser Segimon. It was sold in the 1940s and then became an apartment building in 1953, and went through other various changes throughout the years.

IMG_0702

It wasn’t until the early 1980s that some of the construction was restored, before being designated as a World Heritage Site in 1984.

IMG_0708

During my visit, there was still a massive amount of exterior construction going on, to the point where I wasn’t even sure if I was at the right place.

IMG_0686

But out of the three Gaudi sites I visited, this one was my favorite–the rooftop, in particular.

IMG_0709

I loved the design, and it offers some great panoramic views of Barcelona.

SAM_0703

Casa Milà: Official website

IMG_0767

Casa Batlló

Casa Batlló was originally built in 1877, and then underwent renovations in the early 1900s when Josep Batlló purchased the property. Throughout the years and with different owners, Casa Batlló remained a residence all the way up until the mid-1990s. It wasn’t until 2002 that it opened to the public.

IMG_0759

I have to admit that I have mixed feelings about Casa Batlló.

IMG_0739

It may very well have the coolest building exterior I’ve ever seen. Dozens of people were just stopped outside and admiring this insanely neat place, which to me, almost looked animated. It was surreal.

IMG_0746

This floor, in my opinion, was the highlight.

SAM_0727

That’s not the say that the rest of the building’s interior wasn’t unique and beautiful, but I found it a bit underwhelming; the exterior definitely outshines it.

SAM_0736

Although I loved the exterior, the interior was my least favorite out of the three Gaudi sites I visited.  I’m not saying you should skip this one, but if you have time or budget limits, just admire it from the outside.

Casa Batlló: Official website

SAM_0744

Basílica de la Sagrada Família

This is the iconic Gaudi construction that I think of when I think of Barcelona. Construction for this beautiful church (quite possibly the largest I’ve ever seen) began in 1882, and it’s not expected to be complete until 2026.

SAM_0742

This was one of Gaudi’s last projects before he passed away in 1926.

IMG_0792

Note that while all Gaudi sites tend to get crowded, this one can in particular tends to have some very long lines, especially during the summer. I recommend visiting early in the morning right after they open, or shortly before they close. I didn’t go until around 5pm, and had no issues with lines or crowds.

Basílica de la Sagrada Família: Official website

Barcelona was the only city I got to visit in Spain this time around, and I will certainly return one day–it looks like such an amazing country. And a quick visit to Barcelona is definitely in order so that I can check out the other Gaudi sites that I missed this time around.

If you visited Barcelona, what was your favorite Gaudi design?

One Aldwych Hotel in London

London is an amazing city and one I’ve visited quite a few times already, but with each visit I always discover something exciting and new. During my most recent visit in August, I stayed at the One Aldwych Hotel.

Virgin Atlantic airways

About One Aldwych

Initially built by architects Mewes and Davis for The Morning Post Newspaper in 1907, the building began operating as a hotel in the summer of 1998. The building’s shape bears a striking resemblance to New York’s iconic Flatiron Building. The beautiful interior is the work of interior designer Mary Fox Linton, and also includes a permanent, 350-piece contemporary art collection.

4 T

The hotel features 105 guestrooms and suites. There is a 24-hour gym available so that you can keep up with your routine while you’re away from home, but if you want something a little more exclusive, the hotel also offers two suites with private gyms.

The Location

One of my favorite things about this hotel was its terrific location. London is a huge city, so you’ll want to be in a good area that is near a lot of the top attractions. It’s located right in the theater district, and in just 10 minutes we were able to walk to Big Ben and the London Eye. London’s tube system is also incredibly simple and convenient, and getting to this hotel from the airport is very inexpensive and easy. It takes about 45 minutes and costs just a few bucks, and then it’s a very short walk from the Covent Garden station.

Food and Drinks

If you’re looking to dine onsite, you’ll have two options to choose from: Axis at One Aldwych and Indigo.

LW0416_27842044_Lobby from Indigo

They also have a lobby bar where visitors can stop by for a light snack or a delicious cocktail.

LW0416_53193210_Charlie_and_the_Chocolate_Factory_Afternoon_Tea

This is also where they host their afternoon tea, which has a “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” theme.

IMG_0306

I was in London for just one night, so I didn’t get to stop by Axis, but I did visit the Lobby Bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. I ordered something that was absolutely delicious and tasted just as good as it sounded: fresh strawberries and vanilla liqueur, which is then topped with Champagne. The atmosphere was quite enjoyable as well.

IMG_0315

Following our visit at the hotel’s Lobby Bar, we had dinner at Indigo. I ordered the pappardelle, which was the perfect comfort food dish. But the best part of the evening was the dessert: a delectable sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream.

IMG_0319

I’m not even into sweets that much, but… This. Was. Fantastic.

Other Things I Loved About One Aldywch

They are smoke-free. I haven’t encountered a lot of hotels that don’t allow smoking anywhere on their property, and as a non-smoker, it’s definitely appreciated.

Free Wi-Fi. This is a rarity in a lot of luxury hotels, especially in expensive cities like London.

Whale watching in the San Juan Islands

Just a short seaplane or ferry ride away from Anacortes are the San Juan Islands of Washington State. Whether or not you want to go killer whale watching, these islands are certainly still worth a visit, but it’s mainly the ocras that brought me here. The San Juan Islands are supposed to be one of the best places in the world to spot killer whales in the wild, and I was going to be there at the beginning of whale watching season.

Luggage Pros

You have a couple options when it comes to whale watching: you can do a kayak tour or a boat. Unless you’re doing the longer kayaking trips, (there are some that are five hours long, or even overnight), it’s rare that you’ll see any killer whales. However, there are still a lot of other things to see that you’d miss when you’re on a fast boat. I decided to start off with the 3-hour tour with hopes of seeing killer whales, but being okay with it if we didn’t because we were doing the boat the next day.

5W0C1676

We were a small group (maybe six people), and we were led by two guides, Alex and Chris, who were hilarious and had a lot of entertaining stories for us along the way. We were doing the sunset tour, and sunsets are supposed to be amazing in the San Juan Islands. Unfortunately, it was extremely cloudy that day so we didn’t get to see a sunset and actually had to head back early because they didn’t want us to be kayaking back in the dark.

Seattle_728x90

5W0C1677

Apparently, we did come across a pod of killer whales, but I can’t confirm this because it was so far away that I didn’t see anything. There was a seal right near our kayaks that kept popping his head up to look at us as we tried to get a better look at the whales.

Aside from the whales, we got to see and pet a starfish. Even though we didn’t see much on this particular outing, the scenery was still beautiful. If you’re going to do a kayak tour, I’d do the sunset one because as long as it isn’t super cloudy, you’re in for a treat.  The next day, we did catch the sunset as we were leaving and it was amazing.

Some tips: bring binoculars. Wear waterproof gloves or mitts because the water is freezing. Don’t wear any cotton. At all. I was wearing a cotton sweater and even though I still had two other waterproof jackets on top of that, it still managed to somehow get wet (and stay wet, as cotton tends to do) and it was not very pleasant. They recommend wearing sport sandals, but unless you’re used to frigid water, I’d recommend rain boots. Finally, you’ll want to wear Dri-Fit clothing that won’t stay wet (you’re bound to get just a little wet) and that will keep you warm. I’ve linked to some awesome products on Amazon, so check them out if you’re planning an upcoming kayaking trip in the San Juan Islands.

The next day, we went continued our orca watching adventures by going on a traditional whale watching boat. What I really liked about it is that it was a fairly small boat so it wasn’t packed with people. One of the naturalists on board (which makes me think of naked people, but that’s what they refer to themselves as), Heather, was really nice and seemed very passionate and knowledgeable about the orcas, so she was fun to talk to through the trip, which lasts about three to four hours. She offered everyone a pair of binoculars in the beginning, and unless you have your own with you already, take a pair. Trust me.

It wasn’t long before we came across a pod of orcas that migrated down from Vancouver. There are laws set in place that stop boaters from getting too close to the killer whales, and while I can respect and understand that, it was disappointing because we were really, really far away. These photos (minus the one taken at the top of the page) were taken with a zoom lens. I didn’t expect to go right up to them, but unless the killer whales are curious about your boat and swim up to you themselves, you have to keep quite a significant distance. This is just the law in the area and is something that all tour operators must abide by. But seriously, take the binoculars, because without them you won’t really see anything.

The killer whales we came across were busy hunting a seal, and after watching them for a while, it was time to make our way back. Apparently, the killer whales never did catch their prey—our boat captain received word that shortly after we left, the seal jumped on some random guy’s boat! Now that would’ve been interesting to see; I wonder what his next move was after that.

Speaking of seals, we saw a ton of them throughout the trip. We also saw a bald eagle.

All in all, both trips were a lot of fun and I’d recommend them. You never know what kind of day you will get, but the guides will definitely try their best to ensure you see as much as possible. If you only have time for one and you’re having a hard time deciding, I say go with the boat if whale watching is your primary goal. If you prefer just taking in the scenery and relaxing on the water, but don’t care much about whales, I’d recommend the kayaking.

Essential Travel Information

Getting there: You’ll initially fly to Seattle, and then you can take a seaplane to the San Juan Islands. Alternatively, you can drive to Anacortes and then take a ferry. This option takes a few extra hours, but it’s a lot cheaper. Plus, the drive and ferry ride are both very scenic.

There are a lot of options when choosing an airline, and depending on where you’re flying from, you may be able to fly direct. Virgin Atlantic Airways and Hawaiian Airlines are just some good options. You can also look up airfare on FlightHub.com to compare flights from the airport of your choice.

Hotel information: We stayed at the Lakedale Resort at Three Lakes in Friday Harbor and highly recommend it!

Tours: We did our whale watching boat tour with San Juan Safaris, and our kayaking tour with San Juan Island Outfitters.

CityPASS: If you’ll be hanging out in Seattle at all, I highly recommend the Seattle CityPASS. For one low price, you can see a lot of the area’s top attractions. Learn more about the Seattle CityPASS and purchase one on their website.

The peaceful Salish Lodge & Spa in Snoqualmie, WA

A review of the Salish Lodge & Spa: Only about 30 minutes east of Seattle, Washington is the town of Snoqualmie. Surrounded by lush forest and towering evergreens is perhaps the star of Snoqualmie, and what attracts the bulk of its visitors—the Snoqualmie Falls. And the Salish Lodge & Spa is a little piece of tranquility that’s perched right on top of those magnificent falls.

The Rooms at the Salish Lodge & Spa

You know that feeling you get when arrive home from a trip, and you’re sad that it’s over, but it’s also nice to be back in your own bed? This might have been the only time I didn’t feel this way. I’ve slept in a lot of beds (that doesn’t sound right, but you know what I mean), and this one might have perhaps been one of the most comfortable I’ve ever been in.

I was only at the Salish Lodge & Spa for one evening, but it was one of the best night’s sleep I’ve had in a while. We slept with the balcony door open (there’s a screen to keep the bugs out) and the sounds of the roaring falls, plus the warmth of the crackling fireplace at the foot of our bed, made for a very peaceful evening.

We had a room on the 4th floor spa level, which not only makes for convenient access to the spa, but also includes other great perks. Some of the notable benefits include wine and hors d’oeuvres daily from 4pm – 6pm, and extended use of the spa’s terrific soaking pools.

The Food and Wine

To me, a small part of a dining experience when you’re traveling is how good the food is—the main part is the ambiance. I’m OK with mediocre food if the setting is amazing. The Dining Room at the Salish Lodge & Spa excels in both.

Even if you do end up disappointed in what you order, you certainly won’t be disappointed by your surroundings. You get an amazing view of the Snoqualmie Falls, plus the general beauty of the Pacific Northwest, from just about anywhere in the restaurant.

I had the Chinook salmon with gnocchi, and I have to say that I’m normally not a fan of salmon (I’ve actually been avoiding meat, for the most part, for a while now) but it was quite good, especially with the honey glaze. The gnocchi, however, was probably my favorite part of the whole meal. I love gnocchi, but this might have been the best gnocchi I’ve ever had.

Joe had the confit and roasted pork belly as a starter, followed by the roasted duck.

And of course, I have to mention the wine, which was also great. They have their own private label Chardonnay, Red Blend, and Reserve Red. I didn’t get a chance to try the Chardonnay, but we both really enjoyed their reds.

Needless to say, everything is delish at the Salish.

The Spa

Absolutely make time for the spa if you stay here: there’s a reason why it was listed as one of Conde Nast Traveler’s favorite spas this year. They have a variety of treatments; in addition to massages and facials, they also offer unique body scrubs and wraps that utilize their own herbs from their garden, and honey from their bees. They also offer moonlight massages and yoga by the falls in a special room known as the Hidden Terrace, a serene space that offers an amazing view of the Snoqualmie Falls.

The Honey

In 2011, a four-hive, 120,000 honeybee apiary was installed onsite. A year later, the hives tripled to produce 2,4000 pounds of organic honey annually. This honey is used for so many different things on property—everything from beer and snacks, food, to spa treatments. Just look for a bee symbol next to select menu items.

I can’t say enough good things about this amazing place. I must’ve been to hundreds of hotels and this is easily one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever stayed at. Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway, an amazing place for a wedding, a relaxing trip with friends or family, or a solo retreat, without a doubt this is the place to just tune out the rest of the world and rejuvenate.
